Practical Advice on How to Control Panic Attacks

When people do not know how to control panic attacks they can become too afraid to even leave their home. The thought of having a panic attack in public is so overwhelming that the fear just paralyzes them and makes them prisoners in their own home.

These types of attacks can make a person feel so terrified that they are sure it must be a heart attack. Others may have trouble with their intestinal tract and suffer from diarrhea and nausea that makes them have to head to a bathroom every couple of minutes.

In all of these episodes the individuals are sure that they are going to lose their sanity, and often have trouble holding on to even a small amount of reality.

The biggest problem is usually the thought of the embarrassment that will be created and this is why isolation away from others seems preferable. A majority of people who have panic attacks will remain homebound and only venture outside when they have absolutely no other choice.

Controlling the Situation

It may be that the root cause is some long ago childhood experience that has resulted in mental trauma of one type or another.

As soon as this cause has been identified it is much easier for a counselor to help the individual uncover the associated triggers for their own panic attacks.  This gives the person the ability to recognize a triggering factor as soon as it happens and they are usually able to control the situation by talking themselves through the surging feelings of anxiety.

You can also have a therapist teach you relaxation methods and use these to help you deal with panic attacks. When someone wonders how to control panic attacks it may surprise them to learn that proper breathing is often all that they need.

The type of breathing technique that is helpful in controlling a panic attack is known as diaphragmatic. People will practice breathing deeply from the diaphragm instead of the shallow chest breathing that is most common. When someone uses their diaphragm to breathe it takes extra concentration. This is very conducive to relaxation which is a wonderful way to control any panic attack.

Exercising, body massage and meditation are also good relaxation methods to know. Relaxation refreshes and rejuvenates both the mind and body and this gives people the strength to deal with the additional stresses that is caused by panic attacks.
